HI! I have a photo of a Pelican that is not super clear
but I have seen a few of these in the early summer
while kayaking, I can never get close enough for a good capture
and I would like to know if anyone knows what the formation on the top beak is ?
Is it because its a younger one or a different kind ~ not American White Pelican
or male of female?
Its in stash not good enough to deviate, just would love to know
maybe one day I will get a better capture!

This is an adult American white pelican. During the breeding season they develop these odd horns on their bill, which are shed again after the pairs have mated and laid eggs. Probably for some ornamental or display purpose :D
OH wow Thanks
That is very interesting, thats why I would only see these
the first time I spot them when kayaking early enough and then
none with that formation later in the season.
Hopefully next year I can get a clearer
capture and post this info Thank you so much again !
No problem! I remember seeing a pelican like that (on a photo, we don't have them here) for the first time and being very confused. They look so different! Apparently there are a few other pelican species that also develop a horn like that in the breeding season.
