Hey guys,

I'll be done with exams quite soon, so I might make some changes to this group then. Overall, what are your impressions of the services of this group, and what do you think can be done to improve them? ^^

Hey guys! :)

Thanks to everyone, we now have officially over 1,000 pageviews and over 100 members in around two-month's time! ^^ Great job guys! :)

Also, I've fidgeted with the folder setup a bit, so there are now two folders for each family. The Solved are the cases that have been given a name to, while the unsolved comprise of two types of cases: the new ones and the ones that people seem to have gotten stuck on. If you see something in the unsolved cases, be it new or old, and you think you have a name for the critter depicted, go ahead and comment! :)

Have a great day guys!
Hey guys! :)

Its been at my attention for quite a bit that there are very few groups devoted almost entirely to the identifications of the various animals we may come across, be they in the wild or in zoos. Here, I'm attempting to create a group that devotes itself to just that- identification of those animals that we can't quite pin a name to. The group will be divided into these sections-

1. Featured-
This photo is for 1) the cases that have caused the most discussion or controversy, and 2) the 'cold cases'- the ones that have gone unidentified for at least a month.

2. Mammalian Identification

3. Avian Identification

4. Reptilian Identification

5. Amphibian Identification

6. Fish Identification

7. Terrestrial Invertebrate Identification (Insects, Spiders, Gastropods, etc. )

8. Aquatic Invertebrate Identification (Cephalopods, Echinoderms, etc. )

9. Photo References-
These will be photos and traditional/digital artworks one may refer to before posting an ID- maybe you can even pin down the ID of your animal here, without posting the photo in the ID section. Criteria for photo:

- Must be CLEAR. Doesn't have to be National Geographic, but still should be clear enough to discern the field marks one may need to ID an animal (for example, a photo of a blurry dot that could either be a long-range shot of a rhino or a short-range shot of a moth won't do).
- Should be on the lateral side of an animal. For flatter animals like insects, shots of the top of the body, not the underbelly. Head-on views may work, but lateral/top views are best for ID's.
- No matter how pretty the image is, please don't submit the type of image that's super beautiful in colors and composition, but only shows a black silhouette of an animal.
- The name of the animal should be stated somewhere in the description or in the title of the photo, or we won't know what animal the photo is of when referencing it.

10. Traditional and Digital References
Traditional and digital artwork is also acceptable, but should be as scientifically accurate as possible, and should show the diagnostic field marks of the animal in question. For an example, take a look at :iconbioillustration: 's gallery.

ID Photos should be reasonably clear, but a slightly blurry one is fine, as long as you can see the major markings or details on the animal.

Anyone can give their opinion or help out with each other's photos on an ID here, if they think they've got an idea as to what the subject of that photo is. However, you should not spam assorted photos with generic and vague ID's (e.g.- I think this is a crane, or maybe a stork). Please be as specific and as accurate as you can when making an ID- if you're only half-convinced by your own identification, don't post just yet. Wait to see if someone else will post and pin an ID to the animal first.

Also, do not-
1. Spam unrelated or repeated things on other people's deviations.

2. Insult, harass, or act impolite toward other deviants.

3. Submit reference photos or artworks that do not fit the criteria.

4. Submit photos of plants, fungi, etc. (that would be for another group)

5. Submit unrelated artwork (e.g. fanart, photos or artwork of people, etc.)

6. Submit multiple shots of the same animal. Find the photo you think is most suitable for ID, and submit that, not the 15 others of the same 'shoot'.

And that's it for now! ^^ I will update the rules later, but that's mostly all the major stuff I have to get out there at the current moment.

Have a nice day! :)
